Message 21107 - Posted: 6 Sep 2016, 13:13:54 UTC

After experimenting with a number of options, a solution has been found to provide a default limit on the number running work units per host for new volunteers which can be disabled by those who are more experienced.

Once implemented, a new setting will be available in the project preferences where the Max # jobs can be set. In order to provide this, three steps are required.

  • Update the project to support the option
  • Updated everyone's project preferences to set this value to 2 tasks
  • Remove current the project limit

This should be transparent for everyone and only those who wish to receive more tasks will get them once they have changed the value of this new setting. Work on this will start immediately and should be completed within the next few days.

Will this apply at project level or at application level ?

Does this mean that any existing app_config used to set <max_concurrent> and / or <project_max_concurrent> value should be removed ?

Thx

At project level.

No. The app_config.xml can be removed, but the user can also use it to keep control over the total maximum of tasks of the project allowed to run or the maximum of any application allowed to run.

Yeah sure! Maybe this evening (CEST) and surely when the new feature has been implemented ;)

The new setting should now be visible in the project preferences with the default value set at two jobs. The scheduler has also been updated to take this new setting into consideration. For now the project-wide limit is still set at two jobs so everything should be working as before. To test that this new feature is working, the setting can be used to restrict the number of jobs to one per host.

I suppose, I tested too early. I did set the max number on 1 and updated the project without asking work and with no tasks already on my machine.
Thereafter I requested work and got 2 tasks. See below:

29694 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:32:34 update requested by user
29695 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:32:38 Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
29696 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:32:38 Not requesting tasks: "no new tasks" requested via Manager
29697 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:32:39 Scheduler request completed
29698 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:33:12 work fetch resumed by user
29699 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:33:23 update requested by user
29700 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:33:25 Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
29701 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:33:25 Requesting new tasks for CPU
29702 VirtualLHC@home 07 Sep 08:33:26 Scheduler request completed: got 2 new tasks

Times are UTC+2

Yes. It was implemented about 09:30 UTC+2. I have tested it and it worked for me. First I changed the value to one and got one task as expected and the mesage "No tasks are available for Theory Simulations". Then I changed the value back to two and got another task.

The Boinc link on your homepage does not seem to include the latest vbox you are recommending. Can you update your home page to include a link to download/install the latest vbox that you recommend?

You can find the latest (not necessarily the greatest...) versions of VirtualBox at Oracle's VirtualBox website.

And in my 5+ years here I found things to work better if you download Boinc and VB separately.

I have found problems getting the VB to run after doing that d/l of both from the home page link.

So when you d/l the new Boinc and then one of the newer versions of VB and then d/l your first vLHC task(s) they tend to work right from the start.

I have setup a custom profile for 4 tasks and assigned a machine to it.
After doing Update, I get:

Requesting new tasks for CPU
Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks
No tasks sent
No tasks are available for Theory Simulations
This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress

The project wide limit is still 2 until further notice.

The project-wide limit has been increased to 3 jobs. For those who have not changed their value in the project preferences, they should still be running two jobs per host. If this change has not impacted anyone and others who choose to are able to run three jobs, the limit will be removed tomorrow.

I changed the Max # jobs to 8 in my project preferences.
I already had 2 tasks running, asked new work and got 1 new task.
Asked more and got the message "This computer has reached a limit on tasks in progress" as expected.
I returned one ready task and got 1 new task. So far so good.

The project-wide job limits have now been removed. For those who have not taken any action, nothing should have changed and the maximum number of running jobs per host will be two. For those who wish to run more, the limit can be increased or removed using the project preferences. New volunteers where the project preferences are empty, the maximum number of running jobs per host will default to one.
